Dak Hanmari (Queen St., Auckland)

Went to this place Dak Hanmari on Queen Street. I took my student out and he recommended this place. Basically it was a chicken steamboat.

Never thought it would be so filling...

Pandoro Panetteria (Parnell, Auckland)

It was my student's birthday. I usually bake something for such an occasion, but this time I found out about it like a day before, and I just didn't have time to get things organized. So. I got to get one from a store. But which one?

Pandoro Penetteria is on the Parnell Road and pretty close to my place. I just dropped by in the morning on the way to work, and asked what they have for a whole cake. I was told that they have this Mediterranean Orange cake, and so I went for it...

Goodness gracious, it was great! Wasn't a cheapie though...

Oyako-don and croquettes

It was close the dinner time, and I knew I had to stay in the lab for a while still. Well. I decided to go to Papaya yet again. Yeah. I know.

It was 6:25PM when I got there. On the door it said it closes at 6:30PM. I felt a little guilty but opened the door nonetheless. I asked a kitchen staff if the place was still open, and the answer, thank goodness, was yes. So I asked for a couple of croquettes and an Oyako-don.

The kitchen staff told me that I could eat slowly but I felt guilty and so I ate real quick; like in 10 minutes. Turned out that their last order is at 6:30PM and start clean up around then. Still. I needed to go back to the lab or so I told myself and was happy about the quality of the food as usual...

Ponsonby Food Court (Ponsonby, Auckland)

I like food courts. Cheap food is good. Sure, sometimes you run into a lemon or two but generally they are okay for the price.

I heard that there is another one in Ponsonby and so I decided to pay a visit. It's... Not very close to my work it turned out. About 2.5 km away (or a mile and a half). Yeah. I'm the idiot who decided to walk all the way in the rain.

After finally getting there, my first impression was... It's clean here. Yeah. It's noticeably clean. The ones I've been to, at least the ones with Asians, have been a little on the not-so-clean side. This one was. And I guess it was reflected in the price. Not the cheapest food court out there. But then again, this joint is located in Ponsonby where yuppies hang out.

Anyway. I just had steamed Hainanese chicken on rice. Yeah. walked all the way out there and had this. I guess by this time I just wanted food; any food. It was a late lunch at 4PM...

And on the way home I did take the Mean Green Machine.

Sakanaya (Grafton, Auckland)

I saw this place Sakanaya a while back by chance. I was on the bus to the CourierPost depot to pick something up that they tried to deliver when I was not in but they did not make the re-delivery attempt. Typical. The restaurant looked "genuine" Japanese. It's pretty much just around the corner from my work, and so I finally gave a go. I had sushi and sashimi platter.

It was pretty good but I guess sashimi was not filling enough for me. Oh well. Next time I'll stick to all sushi platter instead.

So, I read about this program KeyHole TV which is a p2p broadcasting program. I am sure it is violating the copyright laws somewhere but it's good to be able to catch up with Japanese TV shows... I never found out how to configure Comodo firewall to work this program though...

Lim Chhour Food Hall (K' Road, Auckland)

I heard that there is a food court near the med school. It's on K' Road next to this Asian supermarket. So, I just went there to take a look. I decided to have a Singapore noodles.

Well... I don't think I'll be coming back here for this. I may try another stall though.

Noodles 'n' Roast (Quay St., Auckland)

I was so tired today... Didn't feel like cooking... Oh well. I managed to get to Foodtown on Quay Street, bought lunch material and was heading home. I went past shops on Quay Street. I saw this place Noodles 'n' Roasts was open so I jumped in. I've wanted to try the place for a while, and tonight was my chance. I had some fried chicken with roast meat on rice. It came with a bit of curry on the side.

It really had this "home cooking" feel to it. It can be both good or bad. I guess it was good for me tonight as I was knackered by this time... After the food, I dragged myself back home. At least this place is pretty close to my home.

Papaya again

I forgot to cook something for lunch last night. Oh well. Time to visit the Papaya on K' Road yet again. This time though I took my student with me; lured him out with a free lunch. I had a mayonnaise-mentai rice ball and a miso katsu don plus a bowl of miso soup. My student had a katsu curry with a bowl of miso soup.

And again this place did not disappoint.

Have you seen the rainbow?

Have you seen the rainbow? Or so an old song says. I hadn't seen one for yongs. It's funny because when I was in rural South Australia, I saw rainbows all the time. When I moved away from the place however, I hardly ever saw one... I wonder what was so special about that place. It's always nice to see one though.

Nickies Thai (Newmarket, Auckland)

My technician is leaving the lab, and so we went out for a farewell lunch. She chose this place Nickies down in Newmarket. I had spring rolls for an entree.

Then a supposedly a spicy Pad Kee Mao Nua which was not spicy at all. Spicy food should be spicy...

Sure the place was nicely decorated and all, but... To be honest... It was pretty ordinary.
