Aavara TS742 Dual Monitor Stand

This is something I have been wanting to do for some time; a dual monitor set up. When I was in the US, I had one with a Dell Ultrasharp 2405FPW and a Sumsung 19" LCD. After I came back to Adelaide, I've been contemplating... Then I saw the ad for OfficeWorks. I saw a Dell S2409W and also a dual monitor stand. Hey! And a day later, this is what happened...

It's certainly nice to have this much of real estate of monitor; have a web browser open on the left hand side while work on the paper on the right hand side monitor or so the theory goes. I'll see how much work I'll get done though.

Brother P-Touch 2430PC

Since I started in a molecular lab again, I needed to buy a label printer for my work. When I'm managing my samples, it's good to print labels as I could never write in small enough writing in such a small area to include all the data I want on that tube. I used to have a Brother P-Touch printer, and it worked pretty well. The laminated labels withstood pretty much anything; put them on cryotubes then throw them in LN2, no problem. The P-Touch Editor software can work with MS Access database files (the latest one can use Access 2007 files) so that I can keep track of my samples using a database at the same time. Sadly it went when I left where I was the last. Since I had such an excellent experience with this brand, I decided to go with it yet again. But this time it would be purely a printer; no screen and no keyboard, just the printer. I went with the P-Touch 2430PC, as it can take up to 24 mm tape which I thought it might come in handy.

I've just printed my first labels for tubes going into -80C, and I am hoping for a long use with this little printer!

The Warradale Hotel (Warradale, Adelaide)

A family favourite. On this occasion I had some salad plus a schnitzel.

Penny's Hill (McLaren Vale, SA)

The family went down to McLaren Vale, and obviously I tagged along. We dropped by at the Wirra Wirra Winery to taste some before hitting the Penny's Hill Winery Cellar.

We had a lunch at the Penny's Hill Winery, and I chose the degustation with matched wine. It was a meal of 5 courses; a soup, 3 entrees and 1 main and each of these had "tasting size" wine to complement the dish. I thought the wine that came with the second and the third dish were pretty good.

It was very good. By the end of the meal though I was having a difficult time remaining conscious; I don't handle alcohol too well. I managed to get on the car, and slept all the way through until we got home. Oh well.

Nonkiya (Okutama, Tokyo, Japan)

Something that came out of my computer. Some time ago I visited Japan. We went to this place while driving around Okutama in Tokyo. It was quite surprising to me that Tokyo still has such green scenery; it was almost like a Nowhereville. Anyway. After driving a while, we dropped by at this Nonkiya joint to have a lunch. I had a bowl of ramen and a serving of gyoza.

It took a while, but I guess it was worth the wait. It was pretty good. However... It must be a Japanese thing, but... People smoked. Yeah. I didn't like that at all. Not very enjoyable when you have to smell the freaking ash while eating.

Krispy Kreme

Absolute bliss. I used to eat two of these in the morning at the Building 31 Cafe at NIH...

I ended up buying 18 donuts in three days before buying 3 dozens to bring home. When I transited through Kingsford Smith Airport in Sydney, I saw a Krispy Kreme stall near the boarding gate for flight to Adelaide, and I nearly topped up. Had to fight the urge to do so. Oh how I wish it's here in Adelaide. Until then...

Bou Gyoza again

Well. I gave a go at making bou gyoza again. This time though, I used real gyoza skin, rather than rice paper. It came out pretty good... Made equivalent of about 80 regular gyoza dumplings...

Cathedral Hotel (King William Rd., North Adelaide)

I started working again, and I needed a lunch. I had yet to organize packed lunches, and wanted to have a quick bite. There is a hotel/pub across the street from where I work, and I used to come here for a drink once in a while all these years back when I was an undergrad. Why not give a go at that place? Schnitzel for 11 bucks. Fair enough, I thought.

Well... I don't remember ordering a deep fried leather shoe sole. I don't think I will be having another one of these again... Bugger.

Prince Palace Chinese Restaurant (Belconnen, Canberra)

Every time I hear "Belconnen" I think of... Baron Harkonnen of the Dune. Anyway. We went out to this Prince Palace Chinese Restaurant on Emu Drive in Belco. We ordered a few dishes; Shantung Chicken, fried duck with plum sauce, steamed Chinese veggies and another seafood dish.

Even with a couple of kids running around, we managed to have a good meal. Wasn't too bad at all.

Dai Ho (Canberra Centre, Canberra)

I used to come here with friends when I was a grad student all these years back. Oh the memories... And Canberra Centre tripled in size (or so it appeared to me)! It's... Wonderful. Better than not having it at all. I had a wanton and bbq pork noodle at this joint, just like in the old days. The price has really gone up too unfortunately (but then again, it was 8 years ago when I was here last).

Chocolate@No.5 (Hahndorf, Adelaide)

After the large meal at the bakery, we went for a little dessert at Chocolate@No.5. I had a Chai Latte and a piece of cheesecake.

It was pretty good. I was bursting at the seams though...
